Our Programme
UNDP's global programme
The overriding aim of all UNDP activities is to eradicate poverty and to reach the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals on time by 2015. Globally, UNDP works with the global development challenges in the focus areas of Democratic Governance, Poverty Reduction, Crisis prevention and Recovery, Energy and Environment and HIV/AIDS. Within these practice areas, UNDP can leverage its global networks and expertise for the good of the 166 countries where the organization is on the ground. Each practice area consists of a number of more specialized service lines (in all 30). Depending on the specific situation of the programme countries, UNDP can contributes through activities within any of the practice areas. In certain cases, UNDP can also contribute to interventions outside these core areas.
UNDP's Programme in Tajikistan
The last twenty years have been extremely turbulent for the people of Tajikistan. The country was arguably one of the republics that were hit the hardest by the fall of the Soviet Union. Counting as the poorest Soviet republic, much of the state budget and the entire economy were dependent on subsidies and advantageous barter trades. Consequently, the removal of the planned Soviet economic system was a blow with disastrous social consequences. The situation was further aggravated by the bloody civil war that broke out in 1992, and that lasted until a peace accord was enacted in 2000.
UNDP has been on the ground in Tajikistan since 1994. Nowadays, Tajikistan is a peaceful and stable country, with a rapidly developing economy. However, it is still simultaneously facing challenges of transition, a post-conflict state and of “ordinary” poverty reduction. UNDP’s programme in the country consequently represents a broad spectrum of activities, within all five practice areas. To read more about UNDP Tajikistan’s projects, please click on the links below:

The UN system and the Government of Tajikistan
UNDP Tajikistan works in partnership with the Government of Tajikistan and plays an active part to harmonize the efforts of all the UN agencies active in the country. The development work of the UN agencies in Tajikistan is regulated by the UNDAF, United Nations Development Assistance Framework. The UNDAF for Tajikistan consists of four different pillars, namely (1) Poverty Reduction and Governance, (2) Food and Nutrition Security, (3) Clean Water, Sustainable Environment and Energy and (4) Quality Basic Services (i.e. health, education and social protection). Each year, the Government of Tajikistan and UNDP sign an Annual Work Plan, specifying the planned activities for the year, project by project and award by award. All Annual Work Plans for 2012 are available within the page of each project under appropriate themaic area.
